Part, Whole Math Outside

Acorns class does maths outside!

This week, to aid Reception class' maths learning they have been doing some work outside on 'Part, Part Whole Maths', a technique they have been learning to enable them to see the relationship between the whole number and the component parts, therefore helping them to make the connections between addition and subtraction. 

The class went outside to use some hula hoops and cubes to demonstrate the learning. During their lesson they learnt that no matter how they looked at the diagram it wouldn’t change. The numbers in the red hoops would always add up to the number in the yellow hoop!

This type of learning allowed the children to apply problem solving in a visual way, helped them to understand their knowledge as well as encouraged looking at differences, similarities, patterns and change!
